Managed technology and risk services for Ontario law firms

IT Services for Ontario Law Firms in Vaughan and Toronto

One accountable partner for managed IT, cybersecurity, network operations and the technology governance a professional practice is expected to be able to explain.

Your firm should not have to decide whether a problem belongs to Microsoft, the conveyancing vendor, the Internet provider or the IT company. That is our job.

Self-triage

Most firms do not arrive here shopping for a service list.

They arrive with a specific problem: something is not working and nobody owns it; an insurance renewal asks questions nobody can answer; a closing was nearly derailed by an email that looked legitimate; or the partner who has quietly handled IT for years wants that responsibility to go somewhere else.

Every service below answers one of those situations. Engage any of them as a defined piece of work, or combine them into an ongoing managed relationship.

Four service areas

Focused engagement or coordinated relationship.

Each service can stand alone. Together, they create a technology foundation that is managed, measured and easier for leadership to explain.

Cybersecurity Services

The area where a law firm has the most to lose and the least room to guess. Layered security means no single password, employee mistake, device or product stands between the firm and a serious incident.

IT Consulting, Governance, Risk and Compliance

For the questions a partner has to be able to answer: what protects the firm, what is the plan, which risks are accepted, and what evidence can be shown to an insurer or client?

How the services work together

Prevent. Detect. Contain. Recover. Prove.

Individually, each service is useful. Together they answer a sequence a firm’s leadership should be able to walk through — including the final question: what could we show if someone outside the firm starts asking?

PreventProtect accounts, devices, email, the network and people.
DetectNotice suspicious activity before it becomes a firm-wide event.
ContainKeep one compromised account or computer from becoming everything.
RecoverReturn to work with backups that have been proven.
ProveShow an insurer, client or partner the controls genuinely in place.

Packaged or standalone

Take one piece — or the complete relationship.

Some firms begin with an assessment, Microsoft 365 hardening project or penetration test. Others want ongoing coverage from day one. Pricing is published rather than quoted on request.

Built around Ontario law firms

Confidentiality, deadlines and continuity are not abstractions.

Atomic Guardian is Vaughan-based and serves the Greater Toronto Area. Our practice is concentrated on professional firms — particularly law firms, where a closing does not wait for a server and a filing deadline does not move because Outlook is unavailable.

Our approach supports alignment with cybersecurity practices and guidance highlighted by the Law Society of Ontario and LAWPRO. It does not represent certification, compliance guarantees or endorsement by either organization; professional obligations remain with the firm and its licensees.

Changing IT providers

Changing providers should reduce risk, not create it.

Most firms already have an IT provider. The hesitation is usually about passwords, documentation, Microsoft 365 administration and backups. A professional transition inventories the environment, establishes administrative access, validates backup coverage, coordinates appropriately and creates a prioritized improvement plan. We do not replace working systems simply because we are new.

Ask how a managed IT transition works

Five questions worth asking any IT provider

Including us.

01If a lawyer’s Microsoft 365 account were compromised tomorrow morning, who notices and how quickly?
02When was recovery last tested — not the backup report, but the actual restore?
03Which people can reach which client files, and when was that last reviewed?
04What happens to a departing employee’s access, and who confirms it was removed?
05If an insurer asked for evidence of controls, what could the provider produce?

If you would like these answered about your own environment, that is essentially what the Law Firm IT Confidence Review is for.

Frequently asked questions

Answers before the first conversation.

Do we have to buy everything at once?

No. Every service can be engaged as a defined piece of work. Many firms begin with an assessment or a single project and expand only if the relationship works. Ongoing coverage is available through published packages.

We already have an IT company. Is it worth talking to you?

Often, yes — including when the conclusion is that the existing provider is doing fine. A Technical IT Risk Assessment or Cybersecurity Assessment gives leadership an independent view of the environment rather than a sales pitch.

We have an internal IT person. Are you trying to replace them?

No. Co-managed IT is designed for exactly this situation: escalation, project work, security depth and absence coverage, with your internal person retaining control.

Which services does a small law firm actually need?

It depends on size, systems and risk tolerance, but most firms need managed support, protected identities and Microsoft 365, secured devices, tested backups, staff awareness and an incident plan. Firms handling confidential client information generally find Atomic Shield or Complete more appropriate than basic IT management.

Can you make our firm LSO compliant?

No responsible provider should promise that a technology package makes a firm “LSO compliant.” Professional obligations belong to the firm and its licensees. We implement, manage and document safeguards that support the firm’s risk-management program and align with relevant Law Society of Ontario and LAWPRO guidance.

Do you support PCLaw, Unity, The Conveyancer and Actionstep?

We support the environment those applications depend on — computers, servers, Microsoft 365, connectivity, printing, permissions and backups — and coordinate with the software vendor when an issue is specific to that application.
